EACH TEAM HAS 5 POSITIONS:

1. PIVOT: The leader of the “pack”. The last line of defense.

2. INSIDE BLOCKER: Blocker covering the inside line.

3. OUTSIDE BLOCKER: Blocker covering the outside line.

4. BACK BLOCKER: First point of contact with the Jammer.

5. JAMMER: Only offensive/scoring player.
HOW IT WORKS :

At the first whistle, the “pack” begins to skate. At the second whistle, the Jammers sprint towards the pack. A Jammer’s purpose is to get through all of the opposing players in the pack legally, and then lap them again and again, gaining points with every pass.

The first pass through the pack determines which of the two Jammers is the “Lead Jammer”. The Lead Jammer is the only player able to “call off the Jam”, meaning that she can strategically stop play at any given moment. If neither Jammer is able to get through the pack legally on their first pass, a Lead Jammer will not be called and the Jam will last the full 2 minutes. Once the first lap is complete, the Jammers will race around the track again to re-enter the pack. At this time she will obtain a point for any opposing player that she passes legally. This race continues for 2 minutes, or until the Lead Jammer calls it off. At that point, the teams have 20 seconds to regroup before a new line comes in, and the play begins again.
JUST THE FACTS, MA’AM :

• There are 3 periods of play
• Each period is 20 minutes
• The clock only stops for time-outs
